In the recently released Gartner Magic Quadrant for Indoor Location Services, Worldwide report, Gartner positioned Zebra Technologies as a Visionary, based on our completeness of vision and ability to execute when delivering and implementing Real-Time Location Solutions (RTLS).

Within the report, available now, Gartner outlines the four quadrants that make up the Location Solutions market as Niche Players, Challengers, Visionaries and Leaders. We are one of two vendors positioned as Visionaries and, to date, no vendor has been evaluated a Leader. But we believe this will change and that we have the potential to be the first named a Leader in the RTLS market.

For those of us developing and marketing our Indoor Location Services portfolio, the report is great news! ‘Visionary’ is exactly where we want to be at the moment. As a business, we would say our focus is global brand penetration, regardless of vertical. We believe as customer expectations increase and evolve, we meet them. For example, our unique Signature Services offering will increase our ability to set the benchmark for how we offer value-added Zebra technology and services through our partner channel. Within this offering, MotionWorks™ Signature Service helps enterprises design and implement their Location Solutions technology to act upon real-time data and unlock intelligence from within their organisation using a range of technologies including RFID, BLE (Bluetooth low energy), UHF (ultrahigh frequency) and UWB (ultrawideband), improving accuracy, reliability and decision-making.

Indoor Location Services in context

Most of us are using GPS daily in some capacity. Whilst GPS is capable of providing geolocation and time information for an object anywhere on Earth that is situated outside, tracking people or objects accurately indoors is jeopardised by walls and surfaces interrupting the signal’s line of sight to a satellite. It’s a challenge, but one we are keen to rise to. Gartner’s report investigates Indoor Location Services solutions that use a mix of hardware and software components, outlining three scenarios pertinent to many verticals:

“In the first scenario, a strategically placed battery-powered beacon broadcasts information such as location primitives or triggers the collection of location primitives that are sent to a location engine for processing and provides that data to a separate application.”*

“The second scenario is very similar to the first except that instead of a battery-powered beacon regularly broadcasting data, the proximity of an end user or object such as a machine is detected by an exciter that creates an energy field.”*

“In the third scenario, no real-time location capabilities are present, meaning that the system does not track the asset/person at all times but only when detected by the exciter.”*

Unlock intelligence from the edge of your network

Our technology can respond to all three scenarios and we are of the opinion that we stand out amongst the ten vendors analysed for focusing on the solution rather than the sector.

We believe this analysis highlights the strength of our indoor location services portfolio due to its ability to integrate with existing technology and infrastructure to create an intelligent, tailored solution for a range of sectors, from healthcare to retail, from sport to oil and gas.

We are highly capable of meeting end-user granularity requirements such as accuracy to within 15cm using UWB – well within the benchmark of one arm’s length (1m) and far greater than some vendors can provide. Our location solution platform is flexible and can be deployed on-premises, in a private cloud, as an Amazon Web Services (AWS)-hosted public cloud instance or as a managed service.

Supporting our RTLS offering, we have Zebra Signature Services, which enable you to unlock, analyse and use intelligent information from the edge of your network. Our MotionWorks™ Signature Service is a solution-led approach to help you integrate your MotionWorks™ solutions (and other technology-based location data) into your line of business systems. This maximises RTLS input and provides actionable intelligence to improve productivity and profitability – after all, what good is data that’s collecting dust?

Partner with us for vision and innovation

In summary, we believe Zebra has all the markings of an Indoor Location Services leader owing to its complete portfolio, global reach, strong partner network, demonstrated innovation and industry-neutral approach.

As visionaries, we can analyse and optimise asset tracking, from static local applications and zonal requirements to real-time services with video. We design for customers not sectors, and rigorously shadow users to really understand their behaviour and needs. At Zebra, we are very much a collaborative organisation, leaning on our pan-industry experience, our strong partner network and leverage both to deliver solutions to all kinds and types of businesses and users.

At the heart of every solution is the technical component but wrapped around this is the software, application, our partner network and Zebra innovation. Whatever preconceptions you may have about global Indoor Location Services providers, refer to Gartner’s report for the ones to watch.

We recognise that for businesses to compete, they must become as smart and connected as the world we live in. Our Signature Services and MotionWorks™ RTLS technology ensure you can act upon real-time location data quickly, to remain competitive and increase ROI.
