Growing up, I was greatly influenced by the cars my childhood heroes drove. So when it came to buying my first car – and I’m sure I’m not alone in this – all that mattered was how much performance I could get for my budget.

When it came to my next car however, the corporate working world and my children meant my priorities had shifted. Brands become important; I needed something solid, dependable and safe. Yet despite my resolve to buy something practical, I still ended up purchasing a car with more technology than NASA, and it wasn’t long until it became a beautiful, high maintenance liability!
