Barcoded Wristbands: Visibility Into Patient Safety

Posted by Zebra N. America September 27, 2016 at 1:00 PM

The use of wristbands to identify hospital patients has been a standard practice for well over half a century. Handwritten, typed or printed, wristbands were originally created to provide an easy way for caregivers to verify identity at any point along the patient’s healthcare journey. From newborns in the delivery area to geriatric patients in rehabilitation, everyone got a wristband.

And that’s how things worked until the introduction of barcode technology, which allowed the humble hospital wristband to become a “virtual voice” for patients and play a much more important role in overall patient safety.

Building a Foundation for Patient Safety: The Critical Role of PPID

Posted by Zebra N. America August 29, 2016 at 1:59 PM

Even under ideal conditions, administering any kind of medical care can be a complicated and potentially dangerous process. When you factor in shrinking budgets and overworked staff, the potential for a wide range of errors increases significantly, and the results can be catastrophic—preventable medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

One of the most common errors involves misidentifying patients at various points of interaction throughout their stay. Misidentification errors include administering medications meant for another patient; mixing up samples in a lab, leading to inaccurate diagnoses and treatment; or even performing invasive diagnostic or surgical procedures on the wrong patient.

Demystifying PPID

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, mistakes inevitably occur within the healthcare sector. The World Health Organisation found that around 23% of European Union citizens claim to have been directly affected by medical error. Whilst many mistakes are easily rectified, the consequences for some unwitting patients can be serious harm or even death.

Why technology is key to improving patient outcomes

Posted by Zebra EMEA August 9, 2016 at 5:35 AM

The NHS is being pushed to its limit; over one million patients require NHS treatment every 36 hours. Demand for healthcare services is rising, whilst two thirds of hospitals are now in a deficit as a result of growing financial pressures. Calls for 24/7 working and improved efficiency will only compound the issue further, as the funding gap is projected to reach £30 billion by 2020. Planned expenditure for 2015/2016 is £116bn and NHS leaders argue that investment in transforming services is the only way to redress the balance.

What to consider when choosing a patient wristband

Posted by Zebra EMEA May 13, 2016 at 7:41 AM

Accurate patient identification (ID) is vital if a hospital is to protect its patients and staff, and provide the best standard of care. Fundamental to ensuring this is a hospital’s use of patient wristbands. In our survey of public and private hospitals throughout Europe, conducted by IDG on behalf of Zebra Technologies, we wanted to learn what decisions hospitals are making with regards to patient wristbands and why.

How bedside scanning saves patient lives

Prescription errors cause an estimated 7,000 deaths in the US every year. It’s easy to see how it happens. A doctor scrawls a prescription for 1.0mg of a medicine on a piece of paper, and a pharmacist misreads it as 10.0mg. Or a doctor confuses one drug brand name with the very similar brand name for another, completely different, drug.
