We’re introducing the Super Six to The Visible Value Blog!  In this series, we will explore the ways that Zebra is providing solutions to the healthcare industry.  Each post will focus on one particular category, and examine the ways in which Zebra is actively providing healthcare facilities with solutions to improve the way they operate.

The Zebra healthcare team’s goal is to provide customers with meaningful solutions that address their main healthcare applications, which fall into six categories. These areas, known as the healthcare “Super Six,” are:

1. Positive Patient ID

2. Specimen Collection

3. Laboratory Labeling

4. Medicine Labeling

5. Access Control

6. Tracking

Today's post is all about positive patient ID - Zebra is the bridge between the physical information that hospitals and medical facilities need such as patient, specimen and medication identifications, and housing that information in the electronic records.

By taking something physical - like a patient’s name and personal information - and making it digital - by creating a scannable healthcare-specific wristband with that patient’s data - Zebra is helping healthcare employees be even better at their jobs: to work more efficiently, experience fewer misidentifications and increase patient safety and satisfaction.

Over the past several years, there have been several key developments in the industry that have impacted the way facilities operate. For instance, in 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the federal government enacted the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which mandates and provides subsidies for the implementation of what are called Electronic Health Records (EHRs).  With EHRs, critical patient data is now captured in a digital format. For Zebra, barcode technology in the form of Zebra labels, wristbands and photo ID cards, forms the bridge or the connection between the EHR and all of the information that needs to be captured. Some of this information includes the positive identification of the patient, their samples, their medications and which clinician is administering the care.
