SMG3's IoT Event Recap
The Internet of Things (IoT) Unconference hosted by our partner, Strategic Mobility Group (SMG3) on Thursday, August 14th 2014 at the Arlington International Racecourse, addressed the growing Internet of Things (IoT) trend and its effect on enterprise mobility.
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to everyday objects that have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data, allowing for real-time access to information about an object’s location and condition. It is rapidly becoming a household word, and it is transforming the enterprise.
IoT is impacting all facets of business, but I'd like to focus on how this trend will impact a specific industry that is near and dear to Zebra: Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). When it comes to proactive decision making, having access to accurate business intelligence in real-time is vital - and meeting this goal requires connectivity and visibility of smart devices. AIDC technologies enable businesses to give the physical a digital voice and connect what was once an "unseen" asset to a visible, living IoT network.
For example, smart device technologies like RFID and RTLS allow organizations to quickly track and locate high value items such as tools, large assemblies and vehicles. Businesses can then use this data to optimize processes, reduce shrinkage, and provide better safety and security throughout the workplace.
I appreciate events like the SMG3 IoT Unconference because our partners need to be able to discuss and share knowledge about upcoming trends and how we can better prepare to address them in enterprise. We, as an industry, share a strong commitment to innovation.
SMG3 demonstrated their committment to innovation by showcasing their new client portal, the SMG3 Edge, which leverages connectivity in an IoT manner that gives their customers additional visibility to their data, and increases remote/online support. Stratum Global, an RFID Application Software company, demonstrated the benefits of passive visibility to processes, and Mobile Epiphany, the creator of ME Process, exhibited a Rapid Application Configuration Platform that enables the creation of customized, process-focused mobile applications. Cradlepoint, which provides cloud-managed 3G/4G LTE networking solutions, shared with attendees their broadband products that help in delivering network interoperability. ASSIST Corporation, a web based supply chain management solution, demonstrated solutions that can help manage their inventory across various platforms.
Accessibility to software from any device is the backbone for one Zebra product in particular: Zatar. Zatar is Zebra’s open, cloud-based enterprise IoT platform that users access through a website, www.zatar.com. Zatar is also what we affectionately call the “Facebook for devices”, and allows easy connection and management of devices – ranging from smartphones and tablets to smart sensors and Zebra printers – empowering businesses to collaborate among workers, partners and customers.
Solutions like Zatar and the other products and solutions showcased at SMG3’s IoT Unconference make us at Zebra incredibly excited for the future of business visibility. It was an honor partnering with SMG3 as they work to help businesses prepare for Enterprise IoT through best-in-class solutions that make what once seemed like a distant future into a very current reality.
