Excellent care with compassion.

That is Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s (LTH) motto.

To provide this excellent care, LTH needs to ensure the right items are getting to the right patient at its hospitals.

Being an innovative Trust, keen to ensure excellent user adoption rates of new technology and technology that also ensures GS1 compliance, LTH has served up an industry first.

Working in collaboration with Zebra partner Ingenica Solutions, it has successfully deployed Zebra Technologies MC18 Personal Shoppers for medical teams in diagnostic areas, such as the modern x-ray department at Royal Preston Hospital. Teams use the MC18s to scan consumables and implants to patients. The MC18s do not have to be connected to a computer, so their tiny footprint is ideal for small spaces, such as these x-ray rooms.

Deborah Watson, Deputy Supply Chain Manager at LTH, summarises: “Although traditionally for the retail sector, our x-ray department teams have adopted the MC18s as their own. The MC18s are easy to use, reliable, flexible and light. The total solution has delivered massive cost and time savings, which have been passed on to frontline care, and ensures we are GS1 compliant.”

Following the success of this deployment, Zebra MC18s will now also be rolled out in the x-ray departments in Chorley and other departments, such as endoscopy.

LTH has also been working with Ingenica Solutions to evolve its supply chain practices, in line with wider GS1 compliance, and look at ways to save costs and drive efficiencies across its sites.

Ingenica Solutions has designed Ingenica 360 software, the first GS1-compliant healthcare-specific inventory and supply chain management system on the market, and LTH has deployed Ingenica 360 at two of its sites. Most departmental staff on the wards and store areas access the software via Zebra’s MC55 for stock movements, distribution, goods receipt and inventory checks

The solution is driving numerous benefits such as £5 million of balance sheet adjustments recovered through stock visibility.

LTH also uses a range of other Zebra products, including:

  • Zebra HC100 Wristband Printers

  • Zebra Z-Band Direct Thermal Wristbands

  • And SOTI® MobiControl to remotely manage, update, support and secure the devices
